Being a Purple Cow in Content Marketing

Be the purple cow

Be the purple cow

In a world of black and white cows, strive to be the purple one.

“Is your head screwed on straight,” I hear you say! It is. In fact, Seth Godin wrote a book about this very thought. In his book, Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable, Seth Godwin says that the key to business success is to find a way to stand out – to be the purple cow in a field of monochrome Holsteins.

If all cows were purple, then we’d eventually get bored of those too, but that’s for another millennium. In this lifetime, they are black and white and marketers must strive to be the remarkable purple ones.

{Editors Note: Seth Godin’s TED Talk on how to get your ideas to spread is totally worth a watch.}

As social media and content marketers in the African travel industry, we know Africa is remarkable. Her animals are unique, her landscapes are captivating, and her people are some of the warmest you’ll ever meet. But not everyone knows this and it’s our job to spread the word through creative marketing tactics.

One of the ways we do this is through travel blogging partnerships. We arrange partnerships between well-known travel bloggers and journalists and amazing African properties that deserve to be exposed to their ideal travelling market. The content creators stay at our client properties in exchange for authentic, inspiring content that fits within their geographic and demographic market.

We strategise how the partnership could most ideally benefit the safari lodge or camp and we formulate a mutually favourable content creation outline that satisfies both parties. It’s not easy work, but the returns are so rewarding.

Here are a few of our favourite travel bloggers, writers, and journalists that we’ve personally worked with and that continue to inspire those with a sense of wanderlust to visit Africa:

Bush-bound Girl

Rachel Lang was born into a family of wildlife lovers in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa and nowadays follows her passion as a freelance writer discovering Africa’s wild places. She’s a true African expert, adventurer and storyteller. She brings knowledge and creativity to every piece she writes and every picture she takes, but especially ones that include elephants. They are her favourite animals on Earth.

Wildluxe

The woman behind one of the top luxury travel blogs in the world, Wildluxe, is Misha Gillingham. She is a wife, mother, and dreamer who also happen to travel to the most luxurious spots on the planet for a living. If her videos and Instagram feed don’t make you want to travel, then I simply don’t know what will! She is currently in Africa, experiencing the magic of Zambia at Tongabezi and then off to Zimbabwe and the Cape winelands.

Getting Stamped

Getting Stamped

A full passport is a happy passport according to travel couple, Adam and Hannah, from Getting Stamped. They gave up the ‘American Dream’ to travel the world and have been to 62 countries so far and have accumulated 8,400 gigabytes of photos. That’s almost 20 computer’s worth of photos, which boils down to over 500,000 photos! They’re photojournalists at heart and visited Africa twice because they loved it so much. Some of their adventures included overlanding with Acacia Africa (twice) and soaking up luxury at Robin Pope Safaris’ Stanley Safari Lodge.

Do these types of travel partnerships sound like something you’d be interested in? Get in touch to find out just how remarkable they can be for a property. And remember, purple is the new black and white!
