You don’t need any copywriting skills to create good social media captions, right? WRONG.

With approximately 140 billion photos on Facebook alone, it’s now more important than ever to make sure that your photos stand out on social media. Captions are one of the best ways to do this.

In its simplest form, a caption is a brief description or explanation that accompanies an image. A good caption should be concise and informative, encourage the viewer to examine the image closer, add personality to the post, and encourage action (if desired). But that’s all easier said than done.

Crafting captions takes careful consideration. It’s all about understanding specific writing techniques, as well as being aware of the psychology behind bringing stories to life.

Here are a few tips for improving your captions:

Be informative
Perhaps the most vital part about writing a caption is making sure that you have the facts right. You’re asking for trouble if you share half-baked information. Captions should also always add new information, and not just state the obvious.

Short and Sweet
With so many other things vying for engagement on social media, a user’s time and attention are two precious resources that should never be wasted. Make sure that your captions are simple and to the point while still being captivating. Avoid using too many adverbs and keep your sentences short.

Conversational Tone
Conversational language usually works the best for captions as people don’t enjoy feeling like they’re reading textbook explanations of what they’re seeing. However, it’s also important to keep the tone of the caption in line with the tone of the photo.

Cultivate Narrative Urgency
Narrative urgency means that every sentence must serve a purpose. The first sentence must make the reader want to read the next one, and so on until the end. This can also be done by using punctuation to add cadence to your writing, allowing the reader to easily flow from one line of text to the next.

These are just a few things to keep in mind while creating captions for social media posts. For more advice on digital marketing, get in touch with us on hello@wildweb.co.za
