In a developing country such as South Africa, the tourism industry is so important as it is one of the world’s fastest-growing economic sectors and can be used as a great tool for promoting sustainable development and accelerating poverty eradication.
This is why we’re so proud to work with various lodges and camps throughout southern Africa that understand that tourism is directly linked to conservation and community development and embraces that responsibility wholeheartedly.
Here are a few examples of the many ongoing projects that some of our clients are involved with:
Save the Waterberg Rhino
Owners of The Ant Collection , Ant and Tessa, founded the Save the Waterberg Rhino foundation in 2012. The foundation aims to raise funds to protect rhinos on privately owned land within the Waterberg Biosphere area. Soon after it was founded, Save the Waterberg Rhino teamed up with The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and StopRhinoPoaching.com to help private landowners safeguard rhinos from poachers. A team of respected members of the community, rhino owners, rhino specialists, and security experts help to manage the Save the Waterberg Rhino foundation.
African Community Outreach Project
The Ant Collection are also active supporters of the African Community Outreach non-profit organisation. The project supports hundreds of poverty-stricken families, widows, and orphans in the Vaalwater area by visiting with them in their homes, providing food, medical care and assisting children in getting into schools. African Community Outreach relies on donations from the general public, businesses and the commercial sector for funding. It costs R20 per day to feed a child and guests at Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill often donate generously towards this worthy cause.
Manyoni’s Wildlife Protection and Conservation
Rhino Sands Safari Camp is situated in the Manyoni Private Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu Natal. The Manyoni Private Game Reserve is a 23,000-hectare reserve which was established as part of the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. The core intention of this reserve is wildlife conservation with a strong focus on protecting endangered species. Through ongoing fundraising and conservation efforts, Manyoni has created a thriving eco-system and is now one of the premier wildlife viewing destinations in the country. Just by staying at Rhino Sands Safari Camp, guests are directly contributing towards these conservation efforts, however, for people wanting to have more of a hands-on involvement in the good work being done, there is the option of sponsoring the dehorning of a rhino.
This is currently one of the most effective methods of protecting rhinos from poachers, however, it’s a costly procedure that must be repeated on each rhino every couple of years, and the reserve needs financial support for this which why many have recommending to use a surge credit card. In exchange for the sponsorship, the guests can then participate in the action and be present for the procedure, getting the chance to get up-close with, and even touch, a wild rhino – a truly moving and magical once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Tongabezi’s Trust School
The Tongabezi Trust School , Tujatane School, was set up by Vanessa Parker in 1996 in order to provide underprivileged rural Zambian children with a sound and holistic education in an effort to improve the overall quality of their lives. Over the years it has grown from a small pre-school to a bustling primary school with over 240 students thanks to the generous donations and assistance from guests and international donors. These donations range from individual child sponsorship, teacher sponsorship, help with our food program, medical program to building projects.

Tshaneni Junior School
Ghost Mountain Inn is situated in Mkhuze, KwaZulu Natal, and offers support to the neighbouring communities in various ways. One of the most recent projects being undertaken at Ghost Mountain is a new partnership with Tshaneni Junior School. Situated up in the mountains on the way to Mkhuze, with beautiful views of the surrounding area, guests can go on day trips to visit the school and interact with students and teachers, or alternatively one can also plan to help with teaching and assist with projects. There are also plans in place to extend the school’s water storage, plant a vegetable garden, paint the walls, renovate toilets, and other general repairs to the facilities.
Doing great work for our clients is easy when we know that we’re playing a part in supporting something greater than ourselves. It’s just that simple!
