With so many options out there to choose from, you’re here because you’re trying to figure out which software is best for web design according to your ability and needs, right?
Interesting question! With the answer depending largely on your skill level…
For those not familiar with coding (HTML, CSS, JS and a plethora of other acronyms), WordPress and Wix are some of the best solutions offering user-friendly experiences with no coding knowledge required. They can be as easy-to-use as choosing a theme you like and merely changing text and images and Bob’s your uncle – you have a website!
That is an ideal situation; but sometimes you may want to tweak the aesthetics of your site to better match your brand (beyond the sometimes-limited options provided by the theme) – this is where some coding knowledge comes into play. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is the language used for making visual changes to websites. Want to round the corners of sections on your site but the theme doesn’t allow it? CSS. Want to create a fancier hover effect than the basic one offered by the theme? CSS! Even knowing a small fraction of CSS can be very powerful.
Now, let’s take things up a notch…
As a developer, what software is best for you to web design?
What if you’re a developer and already know HTML, CSS and other languages? You could still use platforms like WordPress and Wix; knowing how to code allows you far more flexibility in altering an ordinary theme, not just visually, but in functionality too. Or you could build custom sites. At WildWeb we do it all. We have staff who build WordPress websites, but the bulk of our sites are custom designed and built. This allows us to develop sites to very niche specs as well as create unique designs that don’t resemble any theme or platform.
So, what software does WildWeb use for web design projects?
For designing websites, we use Adobe XD, Photoshop, and Illustrator (Sketch and Figma are great too!) and for development, WebStorm, PhpStorm and Visual Studio Code. When it comes to IDE’s (Integrated Development Environments) it depends on which languages you’re coding in. If you’re a backend developer who codes JavaScript and PHP amongst others, you may like more robust software like PhpStorm or Visual Studio and on the other hand if you code predominantly HTML and CSS Sublime Text may be right up your alley.
