Better to give than receive

The father of our nation, Madiba, turned 94, this week. We do not affectionately call him ‘Tata’ (daddy in Xhosa) for nothing.

Not many, can lay claim to a heart wrenching tale of having spent 67 years struggling for freedom and independence, for millions, and ushering in victorious change. The miracle and real story is that this was achieved not through violent struggle, as most regime change, but through a unique message of tolerance and forgiveness.

Thereby, a little over 18 years ago, South Africa extraordinarily came together, peacefully, in the first democratic elections. Following this, with the help of Tata, one of the most progressive constitutions in the world was birthed, in which we now live. It is in this same spirit of selflessness that we celebrate Madiba Day, every year, on the 18th of July.

Each year, Madiba uses the occasion to turn his birthday celebration inside out, directing all blessings to those in need. On the 18th of July, millions of South Africans consciously partake in the event, spending a little over an hour of their time (67 years of struggle = 67 minutes) in giving of themselves, to someone in need, or a worthy cause of their choice.

This year WildWeb played a small part in Mandela Day, with some of our staff taking their lunch break to hand over some food parcels to The Nest, a house of safety, in Durban.

In so doing, the proverb; ‘it is better to give than receive’, rang true, with the occasion being a humbling experience for the WildWeb team as well as  a small act which  satisfied a few hungry stomachs. But I digress. In the end, this blog post is not about shining a light on our charity. Honestly a few food parcels are a tiny drop in the ocean. Instead, this is a short note of reflection and an opportunity to thank Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela for the role he played in getting us to where we are today.

From the WildWeb team – happy birthday Madiba. We love you and May your spirit of Ubuntu become more prevalent and consistent in the Rainbow Nation.
